We are smack-dab in the middle of strawberry season here in the northeast and it’s something I wait patiently for all year! A short season in this part of the country, it lasts from approximately the beginning of June to the beginning of July. But I’m telling you, the taste of sweet, juicy, local berries is something that can’t be replicated, no matter how hard you try.
I love to cook and bake with strawberries (see recipes below) and you can certainly do this all year with the berries shipped from California and elsewhere, but, in my opinion, the flavor is heightened at this time of year when you pick-your-own berries at a local patch or purchase a quart from a nearby farm stand. Sometimes I’ll grab two quarts, knowing one will be devoured on my ride home!
And, side note, strawberries are so good for you! They are loaded with vitamin C and also contain vitamin B9 and potassium. They help with heart health, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure and are sodium- and fat-free and very low-calorie.
So if you’re looking for a sweet treat, but trying to maintain a healthy life-style, strawberries are your jam (pun intended!)
