We’ve introduced you to our Pumpkin Family Collection in the past, but it’s the perfect time of year to revisit this whimsical Golden Hill Studio classic.

I’m beginning to reflect on summer as we enter the second half of August. While I love living in the northeast because of the four changing seasons, there is just something about summer. The long, warm days allow for a more relaxed approach to just about everything, from throwing on a sundress to not worrying about driving in the snow!

As I was reflecting on exactly what it is that I love about summer a list began to form in my mind. Here are a few of MY favorite things about summer:

Gardening: When I’m not in the studio, one of the things I love to do is work in my gardens. I’ve spent many years creating flower gardens, both annuals and perennials. I also love my little kitchen garden, a small herb garden just outside my kitchen door that I turn to often when I’m cooking.

Creating: Summer provides a plethora of creative ideas for our glassware. Many of the summer flowers and vibrant colors of the season have found their way into my studio and onto my glassware.

Pool Time: This summer has been an especially hot and humid one, and I’m so lucky to have a pool not only for a quick dip to cool off, but to offer up as a reprieve to friends and neighbors to beat the heat!

Dining al Fresco: I’ve often talked about my love of sharing a meal outside in the warmer months. Whether it’s quick cup of coffee on the porch, or a leisurely dinner on the patio, there is just something so peaceful and satisfying about dining outdoors.

You may share some of my thoughts, or your list may differ completely from mine. Either way, I encourage you to think about YOUR favorite things this summer; it is likely once you do, you will be filled with gratitude!

If you’re fortunate enough to have any type of outdoor living space, you’ll want to enjoy your time spent there. Whether it’s a porch, a deck or patio, a gazebo or a pool house, consider it an extension of your home and decorate in a style that makes you happy. Just like with any décor project your budget can range from re-purposed to extravagant. Just remember it’s more about the memories made than the money spent.

Consider these options to spruce up your space:

Rugs

If your space is uncovered and subject to the elements, look specifically for outdoor carpets. They are usually designed to dry quickly and not mold from rain and humidity. They also keep the bottoms of your bare feet from burning when the sun is beating down on your deck flooring! If you have a narrow space like a porch, you may want to go with a runner or two. Florals and pastels work well for that summer vibe!

Planters

Nothing says summer like vibrant, pretty posies. Beautiful annuals that thrive in large and small pots come in every color of the rainbow. Pick colors that compliment your space. For example with gray flooring or siding, I lean towards pinks, purples and blues. With brown, the warmer reds, oranges and yellows really make a statement!

Lighting

Unless you have pre-existing outdoor electrical outlets and wiring, I would recommend you go solar. Solar lighting is relatively inexpensive and comes in numerous forms. Hang strands of tiny lights around railings or trees in the yard for a subtle, summery feel. Light walkways with in-ground solar lights that come in all different shapes and sizes. And if you lean towards the mystical, there’s no end to solar creatures (hummingbirds, dragonflies, dolphins etc.) that gently change color while you relax in your outdoor space!
